Marguerite Hemmings was born in Jamaica and raised in New Jersey. She currently works as a choreographer, dancer, and teacher in NY and its surrounding areas specializing in hip hop and new school dancehall/reggae with elements of modern and West African. Marguerite’s style attempts to capture the dynamics and essence of improvisation through choreography.
Her recent projects include being a dancer in the piece ‘Visible’ co-choreographed by Nora Chipaumire and Jawole Zollar of Urban Bush Women; co-founding NYMC (New York Movement Collaborative) a free explorative dance program for teens/ young adults; dancing in Revolución Latina’s Choreographer’s Festival directed by Luis Salgado; and being a choreographer and recipient of the 2011 Fund for New Work for Harlem Stage's E-Moves showcase.
