Matthew Chicoine, professionally known as “Recloose,” is a musician, producer, and performer from Detroit, Michigan where he cut his teeth under the tutelage of techno music pioneer Carl Craig. In 2001 he immigrated to New Zealand, making music for 13 years with a diverse range of local musicians, hosting a radio program, leading a live band, and eventually taking a position as program leader for the country’s first full-time electronic music course at the Music and Audio Institute of NZ. In 2014 he was awarded an M.A. from the University of Auckland for the completion his master’s thesis “The Detroit Way,” a study of Detroit’s musical evolution and how musicians from different scenes and generations learn from one another. Shortly thereafter he and his family re-located to New York City where Recloose now continues to make music, tour as a DJ, and run east coast artist relations and education outreach for DJ software company Serato.
