Chris Dieman is an actor, composer, and pianist whose multidisciplinary skills have brought him into different sectors of the theater world. As a child, he began playing piano at age six and attended the music school of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, focusing on music theory and jazz piano. He spent his undergraduate years at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts studying theatre under Broadway performers like Jeanne Lehman, Kate Forbes and Michael Potts, legendary clowning instructor Jim Calder, and Grotowski disciple Andre Baer.

Since graduating, he has found his way into several lasting professional partnerships, notably as music associate of legendary composer John Kander (Cabaret, Chicago, The Visit). In roles ranging from music transcriber to creative assistant to associate music director, Chris helped Kander and his new writing partner Greg Pierce usher two of their world premieres, THE LANDING (Vineyard Theatre, starring David Hyde Pierce and Julia Murney), and KID VICTORY (Signature Theatre, Washington DC), to the stage. Chris’ role alongside Kander has influenced his artistry immensely, both in the sound of his compositions, as well as his performance style.

Chris’ work as a composer includes his one-man show PRINCE OF DENMARK, the full-length musical PROHIBITED LOVE, DONE DANCING: SUITE FOR PIANO, and several scores for film and dance. As a pianist and mallet percussionist, he played a seven-country tour across Europe with a 35-piece orchestra in 2005, and still frequents jazz haunts in New York. He has been involved in workshops and showcases alongside Bridget Everett, Marin Mazzie, Malcolm Gets, Judy Kaye, and director Walter Bobbie.

As a performer, his theater credits include Stravinsky’s THE SOLDIER’S TALE (Newport Music Festival, solo performance), THE SMART SET (Cornerstone Playhouse), DICK ON DICK (Bowery Poetry Club), THE CHERRY ORCHARD (LABA Theater), and workshops with Abrons Arts Center, Guild Hall, and New York Theater Workshop. TV credits include BLUE BLOODS (CBS) and MUHAMMAD ALI’S GREATEST FIGHT (HBO). He also recently served as co-producer on the New York Times Critic’s Pick LYPSINKA! THE TRILOGY.

Currently he is at work on a one-man, musicalized version of HAMLET that uses the entire text, as well as a cabaret featuring all of John Kander’s newest compositions with Greg Pierce.

Chris’ portfolio for musical work, which spans genre and tone, as well as his dynamic onstage charisma makes him an up-and-coming major player in the theatre world.
