“Rachel Sousa’s artwork is inspired by nature and the dynamic synergy of abstract art. The compositions of her paintings contain the stylistic and structural lines of architecture and typography. Influences from Native Pacific Northwestern Indian carvings, Transcendentalism, Surrealism, Pop Art, and Portuguese Azulejos are also evident.
She has called New York City home since 1993. Sousa holds a BA in English Literature from Boston University, a MFA in Painting with a minor in Printmaking from Pratt Institute, and an MA in English Education from Brooklyn College.
It is her intent to create images that evoke the beauty and resilience of nature, and remind the viewer of their own connection to nature. Colors placed in relationship to each other create synesthesia and read as different energies or musical tones within lines sounding out beats. Expressed, is the abundant richness of metaphoric moral mirrors in the natural world, i.e. biological metaphors.”
