Joao Martins is a pianist, composer, and educator.
He is a recipient of a grant from Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and the New York Department of Cultural Affairs.
He specializes in music of the Iberian-African Diaspora, particularly in Brazilian music.
He performs and records regularly in New York City and is an accompanist at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He recently completed a tour of South Korea with his Brazilian jazz quartet and has performed in Europe, Brazil, and the US.
He is a faculty member of Turtle Bay Music School, where he teaches music theory and piano lessons. He works with the organization MyFace to develop programs of improvisation using music, movement and storytelling for children with facial disfigurement.
