Sam Schanwald is a multidisciplinary artist living in Sunset Park, Brooklyn who creates work at the intersection of visual arts and theatre. Their productions, illustrations, and events frequently deal with queer identity. They have created theatre performances accompanied by coloring books, illustrated projections for live musicians and theatre, and made performances based on their own illustrations. With a fundamental belief in horizontal cross-disciplinary collaboration, Sam is excited about work that pushes genre and boundaries across art forms. They have collaborated with Esperanza Spalding on her “Emily’s D+Evolution” tour visuals, Amy León on her “Something Melancholy” concert projections at Joe’s Pub, and has upcoming collaborations with an opera singer, a visual arts press, and a sound designer. They were a member of the Orchard Project’s 2016 Core Company of young artists. This summer, Sam will be traveling to France, Romania, and Indonesia to teach multidisciplinary workshops.
