Nick Demopoulos is a performer, composer, musician and instrument builder. He has been the guitar player in NEA Jazz Master Chico Hamilton's ensemble since 2008 and leads his own jazz group called "Exegesis." With Exegesis Nick has played at the Montreux Jazz Festival and has toured and performed as a Cultural Diplomat on behalf of the U.S. Department of State in Yemen, Bahrain, Oman, U.A.E. and Kuwait.
In collaborating with performance artists from other mediums, Nick was the musical director of the play "The Golden Veil," which was performed at the Kitchen in New York in the summer of 2012 and worked with choreographer Camille Brown and the Complexions Dance company for a performance at the Joyce Theatre in November of 2012.
In 2010 Nick built his first Smomid, an instrument whose name is an acronym for String Modeling Midi Device. Nick completed his most recent and much more advanced design in June of 2012. This instrument allows Nick to control beats, harmonies, manipulate audio samples, easily play melodies and program high powered LEDs to interact with his compositions. In the last year he has also built two additional controllers called "Pyramidi." With the aid of these controllers Nick has been exploring Artificial Intelligence and real time Algorithmic composition in performance. Please visit www.smomid.com for more information.
