Billy Newman is a Jazz and Brazilian guitarist who performs in New York City for over twenty years. Since 1987 he has been traveling to Brazil in order to research Brazilian music and perform with local musicians Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Recife and Florianopolis. Recently he presented original music in concert at Triboz in Lapa , Rio de Janeiro and a presentation of his Chamber Orchestra Piece at UNIRIO, R.J. While a recipient of Composer’s residencies three years in a row (from 2006, 07, 08) from the prestigious institutions - Yaddo and The MacDowell Colony - he had the opportunity to write much Brazilian music. He performs his original music with the “The Billy Newman Quintet” as well as selected Jazz and Brazilian standards. His groups have played in Cornelia Street café, Joe’s Pub, Satalla, Jazz Forum, Barbés and various music festivals. Billy's other group "Brazilian Acoustic Ensemble" has performed at many major cultural venues in the city including The Guggenheim, Museum of Modern Art and Brooklyn Museum. Billy has completed two CDs of his original compositions with sextet. His Solo guitar CD length recording came out in 2016 and a collection of his original choros was recorded in 2012. He has written a book on Brazilian Guitar published by Alfred Music/National Guitar Workshop in 2002. Every year he conducts the Brazilian Guitar Workshop with 7 string guitarist Rogerio Souza in NYC. He also performs regularly solo Jazz and Brazilian guitar for private functions and at various venues around the New York area.
His formal training includes Composition and Harmony with Dennis Sandole (the teacher of John Coltrane), Jazz Improvisation with famed pianist Hal Galper, Classical Guitar with Dennis Koster, and Brazilian Percussion with Vanderlei Pereira. He has a BFA in Jazz Performance from CCNY and a Masters in Classical Composition from Brooklyn Conservatory Brooklyn College.
