Mary DeVincentis has developed the monotype (a one-of-a-kind painterly print) into a unique and versatile medium for her expressive ideas, which are inspired by nature, meditative images, literature and everyday figures of speech.
It was during her graduate studies at St Martins College of Art in London that she was introduced to monotyping by print-maker John O’Connor and fell in love with the immediacy and versatility of the modality. During a time when works on paper were considered secondary to painting and monotypes rarely exhibited, she began a long term commitment to this medium, which has proven to be the perfect vehicle for establishing a creative tension between form and content, representation and abstraction in her work.
