Honoree: Ella J. Weiss

Ella Weiss has been involved in education, the arts, and community affairs for her entire adult life. Her professional and volunteer achievements share a common thread: a singular and unrelenting devotion to the betterment and enrichment of Brooklyn as a whole.

In her 16 year tenure as BAC's President, Ella has dramatically expanded the organization’s programs and services, tripled its budget, greatly enhanced its partnerships with borough, city and state agencies, and brought fiscal stability to the arts council. She shepherded BAC through a major step in its organizational advancement in 2005, moving the organization from a small, donated office space in the basement of the Cadman Plaza War Memorial to a new rental space in the heart of the DUMBO arts district. She has played an instrumental role in the creation of new programs and services, such as BAC’s Creative Coalitions initiative and its online Registry of Brooklyn Artists. Thanks in part to Ella’s leadership, today, the interests of Brooklyn’s arts community are always represented in planning and policy discussions about Brooklyn: the arts are now “at the table.”

Prior to joining BAC, Ella enjoyed a long and illustrious professional career at Brooklyn College, serving as was the executive director of the Office of Alumni Affairs, and the director of Community Relations and Audience Development for BCBC, and finally, assistant vice president for College Relations.

Ella holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Brooklyn College, and has been recognized numerous times including: Consolidated Edison’s “Brooklyn Women of Essence” Award; Flatbush Development Corporation’s “Silver Anniversary” Honoree; Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s “Salute to Women” Honoree; YWCA’s “Brooklyn Women of Distinction” Honoree; and the Brooklyn College Alumni Association “Distinguished Achievement" Award. In 2006, she received the President’s Medal from Brooklyn College. She is a member of the boards at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College (BCBC) and the Brooklyn College Alumni Association.
