Last year, our Folk Feet video project successfully captured dancers demonstrating and explaining dance in the studio. This year, for Folk Feet on Fifth, we hit the streets to document neighborhood places and people dancing in them: at block parties, Saint’s day church celebrations, nightclubs, and dance studios. It records the dances and social context of 5 culturally specific communities of Sunset Park and Bay Ridge, along the 5th Avenue corridor.
Below are excerpts of Greek dance and Levantine social debkeh in Bay Ridge and Sunset Park’s Swedish St. Lucia celebration, Chinese New Year’s lion dancing, and a Mexican quinceañera event.
