May 08, 2012

6:00pm – 7:30pm

The John D. Calandra Italian American Institute

Using Italian and Mexican examples from her research on folk Catholic women's domestic altar traditions, Dr. Kay Turner, BAC's Folk Arts Director, discusses and presents visual documentation of the relationship between women and the saints they venerate. For these women, holy images are not just static representations but signs of maternal legacy.

The Home Altar as Ex-Voto: Living with the Sacred is part of Brooklyn Arts Council's Half the Sky Festival: Brooklyn Women in Traditional Performance, an unprecedented series of concerts, performances, workshops and symposia highlighting Brooklyn women performing artists, especially those working in traditional art forms.

Presented by Calandra Institute in cooperation with BAC.
