Creative Coalitions is a unique community initiative designed to build arts infrastructure and spur economic growth. Through community organizing and technical assistance, this program provides artists and cultural organizations with professional development seminars, mentorship, and assistance in presenting public events that bring high-quality arts programming to under-resourced communities in specific Brooklyn neighborhoods. Through our work, we will form and sustain coalitions aimed at achieving their collective goals for audience development, community engagement, and long-term sustainability.
Using community feedback as our guide, BAC has provided training for local cultural entrepreneurs looking to create or develop small businesses as well as training for artists looking to gain experience teaching in public schools; and meetings that attempt to increase opportunities for local networking within the creative field. We facilitate and support local groups and artists who are working to expand arts presentations in the area.
Currently, Creative Coalitions initiative works with artists, organizations, and community members in culturally rich and varied places like Bushwick, Brownsville, East New York, and Cypress Hills. In January 2017 we expanded our work to included working in Canarsie and East Flatbush. BAC supports the cultural communities in these neighborhoods by building capacity and magnifying its positive impact through promoting networking, helping the arts market, augmenting existing arts programming, and providing targeted professional development and technical assistance services.
