BROOKLYN RESOURCES

Brooklyn has long been a destination for the arts. But in recent years the borough?s popularity among filmmakers and production companies has grown tremendously. Numerous production companies such as Steiner Studios, among others, have opened across the borough and film festivals and screenings series such as Sundance East are added every year. There has been a significant increase in film and video activity, interest and resources available in Brooklyn in recent years. The following links may be of interest to film and video artists and to the film audience.

MAKE A FILM IN BROOKLYN

Interested in shooting a film in Brooklyn? Here are some links that might be helpful. The City of New York Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting This is a great place to start your research. Most everything you need to know is all in one spot. Screen Actor?s Guild-Indie (SAGIndie) SAGIndie is a union between hard-working thespians of the world and passionate filmmaking mavericks who buck the system. Just because your film isn?t produced by a studio doesn?t mean you can?t use professional talent. In fact, input from indie producers continues to help SAG revise and improve its five low-budget agreements to make it even easier for filmmakers to use SAG actors, regardless of their budget. Steiner Studios Designed to the specifications of producers and facility operators in Los Angeles and supported by top New York artistic talent, Steiner Studios is a full-service, state-of-the-art production factory, equipped for start-to-finish production of major motion pictures, independent films, television, music videos and broadcast commercials. Steiner Studios opened in 2004 and is located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

ActNow Foundation Short Film Collective Screening Series ActNow Foundation is a theater & film organization that focuses on the minority experience in the United States and abroad. ANF has two current programs, the ?ANF Short Film Collective?, which is a bimonthly short film screening series of films from the African Diaspora, Latino community & others and the ?New Voices In Black Cinema? a quarterly film screening series at BAMcinematek, showcasing diversity within New York City and beyond. BAM Rose Cinemas Brooklyn's daily repertory film program, featuring classics, foreign films, and artist retrospectives. Brooklyn Film Festival The Brooklyn Film Festival (BFF), is an international, competitive festival. BFF's mission is to provide a public forum in Brooklyn in order to advance public interest in films and the independent production of films. To draw worldwide attention to Brooklyn as a center for cinema. To encourage the rights of all Brooklyn residents to access and experience the power of independent filmmaking, and to promote artistic excellence and the creative freedom of artists without censure. Brooklyn College, Film Program The Department of Film offers a bachelor of arts in film with a possible concentration in film studies, film production, screenwriting, or film marketing. The department also offers a minor in film and a certificate program in film production or screenwriting. Brooklyn Community Access Television (BCAT) BCAT/Brooklyn Community Access Television, a program administered by Brooklyn Information & Culture, provides low-cost training in television production for Brooklyn residents; operates three public cable television channels dedicated to presenting programs of community interest and to a 24-hour bulletin board promoting services and events offered by more than 1,000 Brooklyn-based organizations; and produces programs of interest to Brooklyn residents. Brooklyn Film and Arts Festival The Brooklyn Film & Arts Festival is the first original Brooklyn-focused film festival. We show films that illuminate the rich, diverse cultural history of Brooklyn. Since the first screening of Brooklyn only films in 2007, the Brooklyn Film & Arts Festival has presented Brooklyn-focused films in screenings at the Brooklyn Historical Society. We welcome submission of Brooklyn films for consideration for our annual Brooklyn-focused film screenings. Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective The Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective (BFC) is a tight-knit community of professional filmmakers in Brooklyn, NY who are dedicated to innovative approaches to filmmaking. The collective comes together through weekly peer workshops to provide sustained feedback and critiques throughout the life of its members' projects. It is the mission of the BFC to inspire groundbreaking films, create an active filmmaking community, and maximize exposure of the best work from Brooklyn-based filmmakers. Brooklyn Young Filmmakers' Center This nonprofit promotes literacy, leadership, social skills, intergenerational exchange and job training and placement through film studies, teaching filmmaking, and opportunities for networking with industry professionals. Coney Island Film Festival The Coney Island Film Festival screens a truly eclectic range of films from the U.S. and all over the world and much to the delight of our audience features a number of "made in Coney Island" productions each year. In 2010 the Coney Island Film Festival is celebrating it's 10th anniversary. The festival's ties to carny culture are undeniable. The main screening venue is the legendary Sideshows by the Seashore theater, home to America's last authentic 10-in-1 circus sideshow. Our infamous opening night celebrations feature live performances by sideshow & burlesque stars. Long Island University Media Arts Department The Film, Television and Media Studies concentration focuses on a variety of paths students may pursue for employment as writers, teachers, archivists, museum personnel. This concentration also aims to enhance student knowledge of film and television for use in the creative fields of directing, cinematography, screenwriting and acting. Pratt Institute, Digital Media Program This program provides the means to master the new technologies that are reshaping how people interact, communicate, and create new forms of expression. Digital Arts prepares students for art and design professions in which new media and new forms have become essential tools in the creation and transmission of audio/visual ideas. Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Reel Sisters is devoted to providing opportunities for women of color in the film industry. Reel Sisters is a three-day festival that screens more than 25 films directed, written or produced by women of color. Established in 1997, Reel Sisters is organized by African Voices magazine. ReRun Theater ReRun is reBar's new independent movie theater - located just down the hall from the restaurant. Featuring 60 reclaimed car seats, a full bar and gourmet snack counter, and a twelve foot screen, reRun offers just the kind of intimate art-house theater experience you'd expect from the creators of funky gastropub reBar. Rooftop Films Rooftop Films is a non-profit organization whose mission is to engage and inspire diverse communities by showing movies in outdoor locations, producing new films, teaching filmmaking to young people, and renting low-cost equipment to artists and non-profits. At Rooftop Films, we bring underground movies outdoors.

African American Women in Cinema African American Women In Cinema is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support minority women filmmakers by providing resources in the film industry. Incorporated by the organization's President, Terra Renee, in 2000, the objective of AAWIC is to improve cultural understanding and overall social welfare through the promotion of diversity in all filmed content in both dramatic and documentary formats. DV.com Since 1993, DV Magazine has served the information needs of professionals involved in the production, postproduction, and delivery of digital video. Written and produced by experts in the field, DV provides objective, hard-hitting, in depth product information: Experimental Television Center The Center was founded in 1971 as an outgrowth of a media access program established by Ralph Hocking at Binghamton University in 1969. Today, the Center continues to provide support and services to the media arts community by providing space and time to artists for personal, self-directed creative investigations and by providing funding and other administrative support directly to makers. Sundance Institute The Sundance Institute has grown into an internationally recognized resource for thousands of independent film, theatre, and music artists. Through year-round support and a series of Labs and Fellowships for screenwriters, directors, and producers, the Institute's Feature Film Program has supported more than 500 feature films. Third World Newsreel Third World Newsreel (TWN) is an alternative media arts organization that fosters the creation, appreciation and dissemination of independent film and video by and about people of color and social justice issues. It supports the innovative work of diverse forms and genres made by artists who are intimately connected to their subjects through common bonds of ethnic/cultural heritage, class position, gender, sexual orientation and political identification. TWN promotes the self-representation of traditionally marginalized groups as well as the negotiated representation of those groups by artists who work in solidarity with them. Tribeca Film Festival TFF's mission is to help filmmakers reach the broadest possible audience, enable the international film community and general public to experience the power of cinema and promote New York City as a major filmmaking center. Tribeca Film Festival is well known for being a diverse international film festival that supports emerging and established directors. The Tribeca Festival has screened over 1200 films from over 80 countries since its first festival in 2002. Since its founding, it has attracted an international audience of more than 3.25 million attendees and has generated an estimated $660 million in economic activity for New York City. Women Make Movies Established in 1972 to address the under representation and misrepresentation of women in the media industry, Women Make Movies is a multicultural, multiracial, non-profit media arts organization which facilitates the production, promotion, distribution and exhibition of independent films and videotapes by and about women. The organization provides services to both users and makers of film and video programs, with a special emphasis on supporting work by women of color. Women Make Movies facilitates the development of feminist media through an internationally recognized Distribution Service and a Production Assistance Program.
